The raw clay, before it goes in the oven, looks like smooth leather. It is at this stage that I like it best but it never stays like that.

After it's been fired, brush on some shoe polish. The leathery finish is just like the one pictured here.

Its true Daniel, only slightly darker and therefore redder.
