
The wall at the Brandenburg Gate,

East Berlin, so dark, so grey, so hopeless.

This was in January 1988. Westerners used to take a peak onto the Lenin Allee on the opposite side.
The wall was solid then, forever it seemed.

So dark, so grey ... . indeed.
I shall never forget the greyness.
As a visitor, circa 1980, I crossed at Checkpoint Charlie for a single day .
That hopelessness was a cloud which stayed with me for a very long time.
