The wall at the Brandenburg Gate, East Berlin, so dark, so grey, so hopeless. This was in January 1988. Westerners used to take a peak onto the Lenin Allee on the opposite side. The wall was solid then, forever it seemed. "He who comes too late is punished by life" Mikhail Gorbatchev

So dark, so grey ... . indeed.

I shall never forget the greyness.
As a visitor, circa 1980, I crossed at Checkpoint Charlie for a single day .
That hopelessness was a cloud which stayed with me for a very long time.
