An egyptian story part 1 This is the home of Amr Khalil esq, an egyptian gentleman, once a flamboyant international jet setter who know lives a quiet life in Cairo.

El sistema has nothing to do with photography but it's so uplifting that I can't resist sharing the remarkable accomplishment of a great humanist, José Antonio Abreu, who dedicated his life to set up the 'Sistema' in 1975, an extraordinary music and social project which has been running in Venezuela.

This is my office, studio, darkroom, workshop, storage...it serves many purposes. It stores my archives, books, travel souvenirs, much of my past and of course my dreams. The room is fairly large but the access is so small that I bad to build the working table inside. I like to work outdoors too, when weather permits I improvise a desk on the terrasse overlooking the garden.

It wasn't going to be a good painting anyway. Tear it, burn it but shoot it first. This could be the story of my life. I messed up the painting (on the back of a Farrow and Ball wallpaper) teared it to pieces and placed it in front of the fire place to burn it. It looked good then. As a photo subject, with its light, free movement and life, it has all the qualities the painting didn't.

The soup of the day. The installation evolves as some greens have been cooked and eaten, others bought from the market. Its very much Claire's way, she's good at it.

West Berlin Cafés and restaurants (here the famous Paris Bar on the Kudam) had a flair of Montparnasse before the war. In between two worlds, the no man's land. A restaurant in East Berlin. Dull is the word. East Berlin was devastatingly dull.

The wall at the Brandenburg Gate, East Berlin, so dark, so grey, so hopeless. This was in January 1988. Westerners used to take a peak onto the Lenin Allee on the opposite side. The wall was solid then, forever it seemed. "He who comes too late is punished by life" Mikhail Gorbatchev
